“48 Laws of Power” – By Robert Greene – Is It Evil, Ruthlessly Pragmatic Or Complete Non-Sense?

An Entrepreneur’s Journal (Day 10): “48 Laws of Power” – By Robert Greene
Is It Evil, Ruthlessly Pragmatic Or Complete Non-Sense?

It’s December the 19 th of 2010, and only 6 days until Christmas…Over the past few days I have been making it a priority to read through Robert Greene’s much talked about book entitled, “48 Laws of Power.” Over the years, this book has been the topic of conversation at numerous entrepreneurial social events, and I figured it was time to go ahead and read this book. As I began reading the book I was immediately impressed by the heavy amounts of research that went into creating this book. This book includes well over 50 real world examples of how ancient, historic and present day leaders gained or lost power. As I borrowed further into the book I was taken aback by the blunt immorality of the book. This book is truly a book without morals. This book is based on a worldview that is truly without virtue and is at the best deplorable.
Throughout the pages, I encountered rules such as, “Conceal Your Intentions,” “Get Others To Work For You, But Always Take the Credit,” and “Crush Your Enemy Totally.” I will not debate that Robert Greene did support each one of his “Laws” with a story that accuratley illustrates the validity of the Laws. Robert does back up each one of his Laws with various pieces of historical fact, however Robert does miss the mark on a couple of key areas.
1) “48 Laws of Power” is based on the belief that there is not a God in heaven who has the power to send us to Heaven or Hell.
2) “48 Laws of Power” is based on the belief that the laws are neutral in their morality. He does not seem to believe that some actions are inherently evil, while other actions are inherently good.
Thus, after reading this book I have concluded that Jesus provides a much more effective and POWERFUL model as to how we should live our lives than any of the characters described by Robert Greene. Today it is the year 2010 A.D. or 2010 “After Death.” Whose death are historians referring to when they say that we are living in the year 2010 A.D.? Are we living after the death of some obscure Asian war monger? Are we living after the death of some English King that Robert had to research? In fact how is it that these “48 Laws of Power” are so powerful, if most people listening to his audio CD or reading his book would have no idea who they were before he referenced them. Sure they might have been powerful in their day, but these men, warriors and leaders he references all have one thing in common. They are all dead and no one remembers when they died except for him. Thus, I think it might be safe to say that Jesus was the most POWERFUL person in the history of the planet. I could be wrong, but I don’t remember Jesus telling us to “Get Others To Work For You, But Always Take the Credit,” or “Crush Your Enemy Totally.” In fact I don’t remember Jesus even having huge armies at his disposal.
I believe Jesus came to Earth in the most humble of ways. He was born in a manger and he lived until the age of 33 as a perfect example of how to live a sinless life. He “turned the other cheek” he instructed us to “love thy brother as thyself.” Jesus did not use the 48 Laws of Power, yet he was the most POWERFUL person in the history of our planet. My suggestion for his holiday season is that Robert needs to spend 48 days reading the “Bible.”
