An Entrepreneur’s Journal (Day 7): Expecting, Demanding & Rewarding Daily Diligence
Managing Our Team To Win

By Serial Entrepreneur, Co-Founder / Marketing Director of Fears & Clark Tulsa Commercial Real Estate & U.S. SBA Entrepreneur of the Year – Clay Clark

It’s 5:00 AM on Monday December the 13th of 2010, and as usual I am fired up. I have spent some quality down time over the past few days making a list of things that we must improve to get from where we are to where we want to be and now it all comes down to implementation. Will our team deliver? Will I deliver. Will I go beyong just expecting? Will I actually take the time to inspect what I expect? Will our managers manage? Will our team demand success from our players? Will our players demand diligence from themselves? Will the workflow be followed? Will we reward the top players? Will we firmly inform the bottom performers of what they need to do to improve? Will I be candid? Will our managers be candid? Will we work with a passion? I am excited about today, because I believe that the answer to all these questions is a yes?
As Monday rolls into Tuesday which quickly becomes Friday, a large part of my job is nothing more than creating a list of lofty goals and an overall expectation level for our companies. If my goals are weak and pathetic, then our team’s goals will also be weak and pathetic. However, if the goals I layout for the week require our team to stretch in a way that forces everyone to work with speed, passion and energy something great can happen. In fact because I sincerely believe that our team is “destined for greatness” I MUST SET LOFTY GOALS FOR THE WEEK. MY PREPARATION FOR THIS MONDAY MORNING MEETING MUST BE NOTHING SHORT OF PROFOUND. Once I have set up these goals and communicated them to our team, it is going to be my job to make sure our managers DEMAND THE DILIGENCE. Many people believe that setting lofty goals is enough, however in reality IT IS THE SOMETIMES MONOTONOUS DAILY DILIGENCE THAT PRODUCES PROFOUND RESULTS.

“You have to inspect, you cannot expect.” – Bishop Carlton Pearson

On a micro level our managers MUST DEMAND EXCELLENCE in every phase of the business. For without this INTENSITY AND FOCUS nothing great can happen. In fact is is impossible to achieve lifetime greatness if you cannot manage daily greatness. After all awards, fame, and monetary success are nothing but the rewards that go to those people who are able to string together numerous GREAT DAYS and GREAT WEEKS together to form GREAT CAREERS. Needless to say, I am up for the challenge, bring on “the Mondays.”
