An Entrepreneur’s Journal (Day 19) : The Reality of Only Living Once
By Clay Clark – U.S. SBA Entrepreneur of the Year, Dallas Business Coach & Marketing Director of Fears & Clark Tulsa Commercial Real Estate Group
As I am sure anyone with kids will tell you, once you have kids time seems to just evaporate into thin air. First your child is born. Next thing you know they are playing the piano and debating with you about your parenting principles. With five young children now in our quiver, our time is flying by faster than ever. Mondays are now blending into Fridays. My wife and I are so busy. In America we are all so busy. In a typical day most people now deal with Facebook updates, email updates, calls, text messages, mail and numerous forms of communication flying at us at rapid speed. If we aren’t careful, we could probably spend 1-2 hours per day just texting, responding to Facebook posts, and e-mailing. If we aren’t focused on what is important, we might even start to spend more time texting and e-mailing than we do pursuing our passions. I believe pursuing our God-given passions is what life is all about.
Each and every one of us has something that we are excited about and “into” that others are not. For me, starting businesses is what gets me going. I love taking my kids on adventures. I love playing basketball and grilling meat. I don’t like being around negative people. I don’t like attending meetings just for the sake of meetings. I can’t stand procrastination and I don’t like talking about philosophical things. However, there are people reading this that love attending meetings and who love to discuss philosophy. Am I right? Are they wrong? I believe we can actually both be right, but we might not be right for each other. We only live once, why spend it with people and in situations that drive us nuts and that drain our energies.
Nothing is worse that heading into a meeting or heading to an event that you don’t want to be at. My advise for you is that starting today you should prioritize living before you die. PRIORITIZE LIVING BEFORE YOU DIE. We shouldn’t just go to a job that we moderately like to do something that we really don’t like for wages that are tolerable. Living like this my friend, is the equivalent of living in a comfortable cage. We don’t live long enough to waste our time doing this. If you live like this, life is rough. If you live like this you are going to look up one day and you are going to be old and you will have missed out on living the life that you wanted to live. Everyday is a gift from God, let’s make a point of not wasting any one of these special gifts.
