President Abraham Lincoln once wrote, “You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. You cannot help the wage-earner by pulling down the wage-payer. You cannot further the Brotherhood of Man by encouraging class hatred. You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich. You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more that you earn. You cannot build character and courage by taking away a man’s initiative. You cannot help men permanently by doing for them which they could and should do for themselves.”
What does this have to do with commercial real estate and the Tulsa commercial real estate market in particular? Nearly everything that the government is doing to help out of our U.S. economy will not work. Essentially, it all boils down to this. If the government will just get out of the way the Tulsa commercial real estate marketing, the U.S. commercial real estate marketing and the entire U.S. economy will be just fine. Innovation, thrift, inspiration, invention, motivational, perspiration, efficiency and price competitiveness will all occur as a results of the economic pressures placed on all of us, however none of this will occur if the government continues intervening into the affairs of the U.S. capitalistic system.
When President Lincoln wrote those words, America was not shocked and those words were not confrontational to the people of his time. His words merely simplified and galvanized the American free enterprise system.
