An Entrepreneur’s Journal – 2011 Tulsa Snow Storm

It’s Tuesday and our staff is working today amidst Tulsa’s great “blizzard of 2011.” As I drove into work today, picking up various employees en route to the office a thought occurred to me, “I’m one of the only businesses that is open today!” Walmart, Quiktrip and our companies. Yesterday when I went to get some lunch this point was really solidified in my brain, but I didn’t seem to notice the pattern. Here we are amidst a great recession and a great snow storm and I couldn’t find a restaurant that was open. What a great day for them to be open. Everyone who lives downtown needs something to eat, yet nobody was open. I think it really breaks down to people’s perspective. Some people view the snow storm as a problem. QuikTrip views it as an opportunity.

This morning when I went into the QuikTrip it was filled with people hustling in to buy food for the day. It was slammed! There must have been 50 people in there buying food. They were sold out of bread and milk and they were almost sold out of a variety of essentials. Here QuikTrip was having a record sales day on day when its competitors were completely shut down. Back here at our offices…the phone was ringing off the hook and we sold nearly $13,000 of product yesterday alone. It was glorious. People were home and they were willing to talk.

People were home planning their weddings. People were home looking online for the right products and services. As Colin Powell has said, “Leadership is solving problems.” Or put another way, leadership is looking for opportunities where others just see problems. I am excited about the people that work for us that decided to come into work today: Marquess Dennis, Eric Herman, Cody, Jake, TJ, my Dad (Thom Clark), Jason Bailey, Sean Elliott and Melissa Hester. It really says alot about their character…

Yesterday the Tulsa World ran an article about the great snow man that my daughter (Havana Clark), my brother-in-law (Justin Moore) and I built. It was fun for Havana to see herself in the paper. Some people see snow-related problems, I choose to see opportunities to build the Biggest Snow Man in the city and to sell the most product ever.
